Modern Art and the Death of a Culture, Hans Rookmaaker

12/10/2009

book list

Rookmaaker was a professor or Art History and a good friend of Schaeffer, and is one of the most important voices regarding a Reformed theology of art. This is pretty seminal work on theology, art and culture, published in 1970. Strong on its analysis of history and culture (not just painting). A lot of people love this book. I admit to having found it a little dry, and wonder if it isn’t speaking into a context which no longer exists, and if it hasn’t been superseded by more up-to-date works.
