My Name is Asher Lev, Chaim Potok

12/10/2009

A very readable novel about a painter called Asher Lev who grows up within a Hasidic Jewish family in New York, and battles against the prejudices of his faith community. Raises lots of questions about the responsibility of the artist in a faith community; of course, because it’s a novel, you have to do the work to draw those issues out. Good holiday reading, or perfect for a reading alongside others with whom you can discuss it.
